The unit has an integral polished wooden handle and 5 metal rods (aluminium, brass, mild steel, copper and nickel) mounted in a brass centre block.
Students can discover which metals conduct heat the most efficiently by placing a small amount of wax at the end of each rod and seeing which melts first when heat is applied to the centre block.
